On the occasion of the 26th Annual Day Celebrations of the Government Rehabilitation Institute for Intellectual Disabilities (GRIID), sector 31-C, Chandigarh, a three-day National Level Workshop from 28th–30th August 2024 of which today was its first day was organised on the premises of the GRIID institute itself.

Ms Anuradha Chagti Secretary of Social Welfare UT Chandigarh was the Chief Guest at the inaugural program of the workshop today. In her address, Anuradha Chagti appreciated the hard work of GRIID in rehabilitating persons with intellectual disabilities (PwIDs). She said that the workshop shall be useful for the professionals by enhancing their knowledge and skills.

The Chief Guest also interacted with PwIDs in some of the classrooms. Ms Chagti was mesmerized seeing the exhibition displayed by GRIID of GRIID products like paper bags, jewellery, masalas etc. Dr A. K. Attri, Director Principal Govt. Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), sector 32, Chd. cum Director GRIID delivered the welcome address and Dr Priti Arun, Joint Director GRIID presented the annual report of GRIID.

Today’s theme was ‘early identification and assessment of children with disabilities’. In the first session, Prof. Dazy Zarabi, Professor at the Deptt. of Community Education and Disability Studies (ceds), Panjab University, Chandigarh, delivered her talk on early identification and assessment for children with special needs; and in the 2nd session, Prof. Chandrika Azad, Professor at Deptt. of Pediatrics, GMCH-32 shared knowledge on early identification and co-morbidity for children with special needs.

The theme for the next two days is Universal Design Learning “Equity performances in inclusive education for children with special needs”. The three-day workshop has a continuing rehabilitation education (CRE) points accredited from Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), New Delhi. Dr Karuppasamy proposed vote of thanks. Around 100 professionals and others working in the field of disability from various states of India are expected to participate in this three-day workshop.
