Rotary Club of Chandigarh organized a program named ‘Hands That Heal’ at Aroma Hotel, Sector-22 Chandigarh to honour the doctors and volunteers who have been a part of International Medical Missions of Rotary Club and have served humanity beyond borders, since August 1998.
The President, Rotary Club, Sh. Jatinder Kapoor welcomed the chief guest, Sh. Rajeev Verma, Adviser to Administrator UT Chandigarh and led for the lamp lighting ceremony. In his speech, the Adviser expressed gratitude towards the doctors and volunteers for their selfless service who continue to carry forwards their mission to serve the humanity beyond borders.
He said that doctors serve the patients with empathy and compassion. The patients may forget your names but will never forget how you made them feel. He congratulated the medicos of Rotary Club who have initiated and taken up many projects like free surgeries and free distribution of medicines in Chandigarh and abroad.
The chief guest added that another remarkable initiative coming up is the Heath education centre which is being set up by Rotary Club in the partnership with the UT Education Department to impart good quaity health education to at least 50,000 students every year. He gave compliments to the Rotary Club Chandigarh for such a deeply committed humanitarian service.
During the event, a short film on Medical Mission of Rotary Club was also shown. Conceived by former World President of Rotary International (1991-92), Sh. Rajendra K. Saboo along with Smt. Usha Saboo, began the project with first medical mission to Uganda in 1998. Sh. Saboo informed that the medical missions to African countries started in 1998 and later in 2006, the project was commenced in India too to serve the underprivileged people living in remote parts of the country where either the medical services were not available or were not sufficient to serve the large number of diseased patients.
During the past years, Medical Missions have been carried out in African counties including Nigeria, Rwanda, Zambia, Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Cambodia, Swaziland, Zimbawe, Malawi, Tanzania, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Uganda. Rotarian teams of doctors and volunteers have also served in various remote parts of the country including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Odisha.
The next mission is scheduled to leave for Ethiopia on 11th August, 2024. It will be a team of 18 medicos led by PDG Mahukar Malhotra. The chief guest showed gratitude to the team of Doctors and Volunteers who are part of next mission in Ethiopia for their spirit of voluntary service. He wished the team members all success in their mission and said that nothing can match their humanitarian contribution to society.
The Rotarians along with the Adviser to Administrator UT, also celebrated the 90th birthday of Sh. R.K. Saboo. Among others, Dr. Suman Singh, Director Health, UT Chandigarh and Sh. R.K. Saboo, Dr. SPS Grewal, Dr. R.S. Parmar were also present on the occasion.

रोटरी क्लब ऑफ चंडीगढ़ ने अगस्त 1998 से रोटरी क्लब के अंतर्राष्ट्रीय चिकित्सा मिशन का हिस्सा रहे और सीमाओं से परे मानवता की सेवा करने वाले डॉक्टरों और स्वयंसेवकों को सम्मानित करने के लिए अरोमा होटल, सेक्टर-22 चंडीगढ़ में ‘हैंड्स दैट हील’ नामक एक कार्यक्रम आयोजित किया। रोटरी क्लब के अध्यक्ष श्री जतिंदर कपूर ने मुख्य अतिथि, यूटी चंडीगढ़ के प्रशासक के सलाहकार श्री राजीव वर्मा का स्वागत किया और दीप प्रज्ज्वलन समारोह का नेतृत्व किया।
सलाहकार ने अपने भाषण में डॉक्टरों और स्वयंसेवकों के प्रति उनकी निस्वार्थ सेवा के लिए आभार व्यक्त किया जो सीमाओं से परे मानवता की सेवा करने के अपने मिशन को आगे बढ़ाते रहते हैं। उन्होंने कहा कि डॉक्टर सहानुभूति और करुणा के साथ मरीजों की सेवा करते हैं। मरीज आपका नाम भूल सकते हैं लेकिन यह कभी नहीं भूलेंगे कि आपने उन्हें कैसा महसूस कराया। उन्होंने रोटरी क्लब के उन चिकित्सकों को बधाई दी जिन्होंने चंडीगढ़ और विदेशों में मुफ्त सर्जरी और दवाओं के मुफ्त वितरण जैसी कई परियोजनाएं शुरू की हैं।
मुख्य अतिथि ने कहा कि आने वाली एक और उल्लेखनीय पहल स्वास्थ्य शिक्षा केंद्र है, जिसे रोटरी क्लब द्वारा यूटी शिक्षा विभाग के साथ साझेदारी में स्थापित किया जा रहा है, ताकि हर साल कम से कम 50,000 छात्रों को अच्छी गुणवत्ता वाली स्वास्थ्य शिक्षा प्रदान की जा सके। उन्होंने रोटरी क्लब चंडीगढ़ को इस तरह की गहन मानवीय सेवा के लिए बधाई दी। कार्यक्रम के दौरान रोटरी क्लब के चिकित्सा मिशन पर एक लघु फिल्म भी दिखाई गई।
रोटरी इंटरनेशनल (1991-92) के पूर्व विश्व अध्यक्ष श्री राजेंद्र के. साबू ने श्रीमती उषा साबू के साथ मिलकर 1998 में युगांडा में पहले चिकित्सा मिशन के साथ इस परियोजना की शुरुआत की। श्री साबू ने बताया कि अफ्रीकी देशों में चिकित्सा मिशन 1998 में शुरू हुए और बाद में 2006 में, देश के दूरदराज के इलाकों में रहने वाले वंचित लोगों की सेवा के लिए भारत में भी परियोजना शुरू की गई, जहां या तो चिकित्सा सेवाएं उपलब्ध नहीं थीं या बड़ी संख्या में बीमार रोगियों की सेवा करने के लिए पर्याप्त नहीं थीं।
पिछले वर्षों के दौरान, नाइजीरिया, रवांडा, जाम्बिया, कांगो, लेसोथो, मेडागास्कर, कंबोडिया, स्वाज़ीलैंड, जिम्बावे, मलावी, तंजानिया, नाइजीरिया, इथियोपिया और युगांडा सहित अफ्रीकी देशों में चिकित्सा मिशन चलाए गए हैं। डॉक्टरों और स्वयंसेवकों की रोटेरियन टीमों ने उत्तर प्रदेश, मध्य प्रदेश, जम्मू और कश्मीर, ओडिशा सहित देश के विभिन्न दूरदराज के हिस्सों में भी सेवा की है।
अगला मिशन 11 अगस्त, 2024 को इथियोपिया के लिए रवाना होने वाला है। यह पीडीजी महुकर मल्होत्रा के नेतृत्व में 18 चिकित्सकों की एक टीम होगी। मुख्य अतिथि ने डॉक्टरों और स्वयंसेवकों की टीम के प्रति आभार व्यक्त किया जो इथियोपिया में अगले मिशन का हिस्सा हैं, उनकी स्वैच्छिक सेवा की भावना के लिए। उन्होंने टीम के सदस्यों को उनके मिशन में सफलता की कामना की और कहा कि समाज के लिए उनके मानवीय योगदान की बराबरी कोई नहीं कर सकता।
रोटेरियन ने प्रशासक यूटी के सलाहकार के साथ श्री आर.के. साबू का 90वां जन्मदिन भी मनाया। इस अवसर पर अन्य लोगों के अलावा यूटी चंडीगढ़ की स्वास्थ्य निदेशक डॉ. सुमन सिंह, श्री आर.के. साबू, डॉ. एस.पी.एस. ग्रेवाल, डॉ. आर.एस. परमार भी उपस्थित थे।
