Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) celebrated a triumphant moment as it welcomed the prestigious Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy to its campus for the 25th time among 1183 universities of the country. The spirited event was marked by jubilation and fervor, with players, coaches, university officials, and eminent personalities joining in the festivities, graced by the presence of Vice Chancellor Prof. Jaspal Singh Sandhu.

Prof. Karanjeet Singh Kahlon, Registrar, Prof. Preet Mohinder Singh Bedi, Dean Students Welfare and Dr. Kanwar Mandeep Singh, Director Sports among others dignitaries were present on this memorable event. Honorable Chief Minister Punjab S. Bhagwant Singh Mann conveyed his congratulations to the Vice Chancellor and the University fraternity for securing the MAKA Trophy.

The Syndicate and Senate members joined in acknowledging this exceptional achievement. He also congratulated two Arujna Awardee of this year Aishwarya Pratap Singh Tomar of Physical Education Department of GNDU and Prachi Yadav of HMV College Jalandhar.  With this GNDU Arjuna Awardee list has been increased to 38 till date.

The trophy, adorned with flowers, was paraded on an open jeep alongside accomplished players from national international sports events. Led by the Cabinet Minister Mr. Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, Vice Chancellor Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Prof. K.S. Kahlon, University's sports department, this vibrant procession toured the campus's main departments, concluding at the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Bhawan Auditorium.

The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as student-players and coaches expressed their joy through lively bhangra performances to the rhythmic drum beats. A special function and prize distribution ceremony at the Auditorium of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Bhawan commemorated this significant victory was held which was graced by Cabinet Minister Mr. Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer as the chief guest.

Vice Chancellor Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu highlighted the achievement's importance and praised the relentless dedication of the university's sports personnel. While congratulating on this winning time, S. Gurmeet Singh said that Punjab has a huge sports culture which needs to be preserved. For this, the Punjab government has proposed to prepare village-to-village sports nurseries.

On this occasion, he invited all those colleges, schools and other institutions to prepare sports nurseries at their level, the government will provide them one coach and other facilities. He highlighted the details of the sports policy prepared by the Punjab government and also said that now every sportsperson will be given a guaranteed job by the Punjab government who will perform best in Olympic, Asian games etc.

He also congratulated two Arujna Awardee of this year Aishwarya Pratap Singh Tomar of Physical Education Department of GNDU and Prachi Yadav of HMV College Jalandhar.  He also annocued Rs. 25  Lakh for GNDU sports equipement on behalf of Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann.

He told the players that just as Guru Nanak Dev University has won the first place among all the 1183 universities in the country by winning the Maka Trophy, now due to this, Punjab State will become no.1 in sports. He said that the road map prepared by the Punjab Government to promote sports is exclusive. He said the players should work hard and not to worry about their career, the Punjab government will worry about them and their career.

Dr. Mrs. Ajay Sareen president GNDU Sports Committee (Women) & Principal, HMV College welcomed the chief guest and others while Sh. Kanwar Mandeep Singh presented the detailed report of the department., Dr Mehal Singh president GNDU Sports Committee (Men) and principal Khalsa College  presented vote of thanks.

On this occasion, GNDU Inter-College Overall General Championship Trophies 2022-23 were also distributed to the winner colleges. Trophies are : Overall Shaheed Bhagat Singh Yadgari Trophy 2022-23 - Khalsa College, Amritsar. A Division Men winner trophy - Khalsa College, Amritsar, Runners-up Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar. A Division Women Winner Trophy - H.M.V. College, Jalandhar and Runners  Up - B.B.K.D.A.V. College, Amritsar. B Division Winner - S.S.M. College Dinanagar. B Division Women winner trohphy Hindu College Amritsar and Runners-Up trophy DAV College, Amritsar.
