The use of plastic is very harmful to the environment and human life and single use plastic has a reason in spreading pollution. These single use plastics are also the cause of the sewerage blockage problem. These words were expressed by Budhlada MLA Shri Budh Ram today during the district level awareness campaign regarding the ban of single use plastic at the Bachat Bhavan.

He thanked Chief Minister Punjab Mr.  Bhagwant Mann for starting this campaign against single use plastic. Chief Minister Punjab has started the campaign from Dhuri in Sangrur district.He said that the environment has become polluted and the Punjab government is working with full determination to make environment clean. 

He said that the government has planted lakhs of saplings by running a campaign with the support of the people in the past and now an awareness campaign has been started in the entire state to curb the use of single use plastic.The MLA said that the support of the district administration is very important to make this campaign of the government a success and everyone should refrains from using single use plastic considering as their own responsibility towards the environment. 

He said that students should be made aware of the negative effects of single-use plastic during the morning prayer meetings in schools so that this campaign can be spread from house to house.He said that helpless animals also loose their lives by eating these plastic items and many species of birds have also disappeared due to this polluted environment.He said that single use plastic products are main cause of many diseases.

During the event, Deputy Commissioner Mrs. Baldeep Kaur said that we have to connect with our heritage to save the environment from pollution.  She said that our ancestors used to carry cloth bags and we need to bring this legacy back.  She said that whenever we go to buy goods from the market, we must keep a cloth or jute bag with us because if we do not ask for plastic bags, then its supply will automatically stop.  

She said that plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose and it also causes death of animals by entering rivers and canals. She said that due to this, the structure of the soil also deteriorates, so we should refrain from using them.

The Deputy Commissioner said that the government has banned 19 types of single-use plastics items which includes ear buds with plastic sticks,  plastic sticks for balloons, candies and ice-creams, plastic flags plastic straws, polystyrene (thermocol) for decoration,  plates, cups, glasses, cutlery items such as forks, spoons, knives, stirers, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards and cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 microns, etc.

During the event, the poster of lucky draw under the foundation scheme was also released, in which 10 lucky account holders out of 7500 newly opened accounts under Sukanya Samridhi Yojana from 20 July 2022 to 15 August 2022 will be given Rs. 2000 per account by the district administration.  

On this occasion, Sumandeep Kaur, a student of Government Senior Secondary School Nangal Khurd, presented a speech on the topic of environment and single use plastic.  During this event, video by Department of Science, Technology and Environment was also shown and jute bags and awareness pamphlets were also distributed.

On this occasion SP Mr. Digvijay Kapil, Ms. Tushita Gulati, Senior Environmental Engineer Mr. Rajeev Goyal, District Development and Panchayat Officer Mr. Parampal Singh and Assistant Environmental Engineer Mr. Ravideep Singla were present besides the officers and employees of various departments, cluster heads from schools, executive officers of local bodies, municipal councillors and prominent persons of the District were present.
