The Punjab government led by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has till Sunday spent Rs 4.98 crore for ensuring free travel to around 87,000 migrants as starting from May 5th, 71 ‘Shramik Express’ trains would chug from the city by Sunday night to ferry the migrants to their native states.Due to constant efforts of the state government 67th ‘Shramik Express’ train carrying migrants today left the city station for Bhagalpur (Bihar) at 10 am, 68th to Muzaffarpur (Bihar) at 1pm and 69th to Arariya (Bihar) at 4pm. Similarly two more trains would ply from the city for Vaishali (Bihar) at 7 pm and Koderma (Jharkhand) at 1o pm. Each train had capacity of 1600 passengers and the Punjab government on Sunday spent Rs 10.80 lakh for free travel to Bhagalpur, Rs. 9.68 lakh for Muzaffarpur, Rs 11.36 lakh for Arariya, Rs 9.52 lakh for Vaishali and Rs 10.16 lakh for Koderma. Under this ambitious scheme in which free travel facility was being provided to the migrants desirous to move to their respective states the state government has run free trains to Daltonganj in Jharkhand, Gajipur and Banaras in UP, Lucknow, Gorakhpur and Ayodhya, Azamgarh, Darbhanga, Bahraich, Sultanpur, Mujaffar Nagar, Akbarpur, Kathiyar, Azamgarh, Faizabad, Sultanpur, Barkakhana, Chapra, Azamgarh, Katni, Faizabad, Gaya, Gorakhpur, Gonda, Bettiah, Sitapur, Rai Bareli, Vijavada, Gaya, Partapgarh, Unnao, Gaya, Mau, Bettiah, Faizabad, Vijaywada, Kerala and other parts of the country.In total the state government has spent around Rs 4.98 crore to facilitate more than 87,000 migrants for moving to their respective states from the city. The district administration led by Deputy Commissioner Mr. Varinder Kumar Sharma, Commissioner of Police Mr. Gurpreet Singh Bhullar and Senior Superintendent of Police Mr. Navjot Singh Mahal were already on their toes to ensure the smooth and hassle free movement of the migrants from the district. Apart from ensuring free travel in the trains, the district administration on the directions of the state government was also providing free food to the migrants along with water and other facilities.The migrants were transported to the city station from the transit points free of cost in the state run transport. At the city station medical screening of all the migrants was ensured before the boarding into the train, for which norm of social distancing was being followed. The district administration Jalandhar has exclusively appointed two officers including Additional Commissioner Municipal Corporation Ms. Babita Kler and Deputy Commissioner of Police Mr. Balkar Singh for ensuring the comfortable, smooth and hassle free journey of migrants.
