Of late, selling of petrol bottles on the roadside has become a new trend in Kashmir as most of the fuel stations remain closed during the day. Those selling petrol on roadside in various parts of Srinagar claim that they are doing it to earn their livelihood as the present situation has chocked their various means of survival.According to wire news service— Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the selling of petrol bottles which is common nowadays in valley has attracted a good customer base due to the closure of most of the fuel stations in Kashmir. The selling of petrol is helping out most of the people to some extent by providing them a source of income at this crucial juncture when most of the business activities continue to remain suspended in the region. The selling of these petrol bottles by the local roadside vendors is providing some sort of relief to the distressed vendors by letting them to earn few more bucks by taking the advantage of the closure of petrol pumps during the daytime in valley.Abdul Khaliq (name changed) a resident of Srinagar said,” The situation has left us with no option for our survival, as this small attempt is the only source by which I can feed my family during this tormenting time.”He told KNO that he usually earns Rs 10 on a single bottle of 1 litre and is satisfied somehow with this business. He further added,” I am basically having a grocery store which is closed since August 5 and now I am selling petrol on the roadside in order to fetch some money for my survival.”Ashiq Ahmad, a customer based in Srinagar said “The closure of most of the petrol pumps in Srinagar has brought me here to buy few litres of petrol for my motorcycle even though I tried to visit most of the pumps but all of them remained closed due to the prevailing uncertainty.”He said that he is not sure about the quality of the petrol but he has no other option left. He further added that,” The ongoing uneasy calm has forced many people to pursue different jobs which are quite different from their real life experience as I don’t see any connection when a grocery shop owner sells petrol it’s totally unexpected.” (KNO)
