In a unique Police-Public initiative, the Ropar Police on Sunday launched ‘Police At Doorsteps’ program to address the complaints with petty issues on the spot through mutual understanding and satisfaction of both the parties.Under ‘Police At Doorsteps’, the Police today organised 10 camps in the district witnessing massive participation of 4000 people besides resolving 530 complaints. Both the parties including complainant and opposite side came together in these camps for a mutually agreeable solution.Giving details of the program Ropar SSP Swapan Sharma revealed that the District Police has started this monthly programme to ease the workload of petty complaints. The SSP said that it had been observing for the couple of months that petty complaints relating to minor issues take up lot of time, effort and man-hours of police personal and public alike. Based on management studies such a campaign would bring healthy interaction between police and public on one hand besides easing the public harassment of coming to police office time and again for a single work on the other.Elaborating the program, the SSP said that the complaints received in the district police office and down the hierarchy to the police posts had been categorized based on offence types. On the first Sunday of every month both the complainant and the accused are called to the respective offices and the grievances of both is sorted out amicably and all this is done in a congenial atmosphere where the results have been extra ordinary, he added.

A sarpanch from Anandpur Sahib lauded POLICE AT DOORSTEPS initiatives, “It was great relief to aggrieved parties to get help to resolve issues where the Police and village elderly were there to assist and help.” A ward member from Chamkaur Sahib shared, “It was heartening to see authorities reach out to common public in congenial atmosphere to resolve issues.” The petty complaints were that of quarrels, domestic disputes, water sharing in fields and the like. Generally such complaints take too much manpower, paper work, POLICE AT DOORSTEPS helped hugely to save time and the issues were resolved at public’s convenience. The aggrieved parties that met in a congenial atmosphere at various locations along with the arrangements of tea, snacks and lunch. An elderly or few from the village joined the police to help parties reach amicable solutions, said the SSP adding, “there are 600 complaints earmarked to be resolved. In a day, 530 complaints have been disposed off, where both the parties come together for a mutually agreeable solution.”This unique initiative harnesses the role of Panchyati Raj Institution that has been paramount in such camps. Taking the local community leadership along the district police, the local police has upheld the traditions of community policing. It also show Police in new light, as positive stakeholders in ensuring harmony in society.
