Senior Parliamentarian and the Senior most Presiding Officer of India, Dr. Charnjit Singh Atwal, Speaker Punjab Legislative Assembly has been nominated for the second time as the Regional Representative from India Region for the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) by Mrs. Sumitra Mahajan, Speaker Lok Sabha. He succeeded Mr. Nadendla Manohar, Speaker, Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, who hitherto occupied this position. Previously, Dr. Atwal was elected as Regional Representative for Asia Region of Executive Committee of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association at Trinidad and Tobago in September 1999.
The nomination has come as a great honour not only for the people of Punjab, but for the whole Legislators' fraternity of India who look upon Dr. Atwal as a Parliamentarian-par-excellence. The political experience, administrative acumen, intellectual outlook and active participation and keen interest shown in the activities of CPA by Dr. Atwal has earned him various International Positions in the past also. He was elected as Vice Chairman of Executive Committee of CPA in September 2001. He was also nominated as Member of Sub Committee of International Program Planning of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.Dr. Atwal would hold this position till 2016. As a member of CPA Executive Committee. Dr. Atwal will also attend the CPA Executive Committee Meeting to be held at Yaounde, Cameroon from 4th to 5th October, 2014 in connection with the CPA conference of Speakers/Delegates of all CPA-Member countries.
