Lok Sabha MP Chaudhary Santokh Singh and MLA Pargat Singh today called upon the media fraternity to play a constructive role in strengthening the ethos of democratic values in the country.Addressing the gathering during the second state conference organized by the Punjab and Chandigarh Journalist Union here at the Lyallpur Khalsa College for Women, the Lok Sabha MP and MLA described the media fraternity as the fourth and formidable pillar of the Indian democratic system. They said that the media houses must play an important role in spreading the power of democracy to the common man. They said that the media was acting as a vehicle for propagating the idea of freedom amongst the masses.The MP and MLA said that the media must realize that its role was to preserve and promote the freedom of an individual in the truest sense. They said that it was possible only if the media becomes a voice of the poorest of the poor. They hoped that media would continue to set examples in constructive journalism, with focus on development and the problems of the people.The MP and MLA said that media has already given new direction to the lives of people and hoped that it would continue to do so in future. Lauding the efforts made by the organizing committee for holding this conference, they said that it was matter of pride and satisfaction that this conference was being held in the city, which was the hub of media in the region. They expressed hope that such conferences would further sharpen the expertise of the journalists and enable them to perform their duty towards society in far better manner.Earlier former President of National President of India Journalist Union Mr. SN Sinha, President Mr. Balwinder Jammu, Chairman Mr. Balbir Jandu, Secretary General Mr. Pritam Rupal, Mr. Pal Singh Nauli, Mr. Balwinder Singh Bhangu, Ms. Kusum Arora, Mr. Amarjit Singh Nijjar and others welcomed the guests on the occasion.
