On resistance leadership’s call, Kashmir observes shutdown

Kashmir region observed a strike on the call of resistance leadership which was called in continuity of the protest calendar being issued since July 8 when government troops killed Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Muzzafar Wani in an encounter. According to GNS correspondent, in view of the Friday, authorities since early morning had deployed additional contingents of government forces in sensitive areas of Srinagar including in Old City. However, there was no restriction on the movement of people.Additional forces men were also deployed in Civil Lines areas including in Maisuma, Lal Chowk, Budshah Chowk and adjoining areas. Almost all the shops, petrol pumps, commercial units and were closed. 

But transport was unaffected.Meanwhile, a procession was taken out from Jamia Masjid in Old City during which protesters shouted slogans in favour Islam and Azadi. The demonstrators also raised slogans in favour of young Insha, who was hit and blinded by pellets during 2016 mass uprising. The protesters also burnt pictures of actress Zaira Wasim’s meeting with CM Mehbooba Mufti.Later the protesters amid anti-India and pro-Azadi slogans hurled stones and bricks, ensuing clashes between the two sides that continued intermittently. Police said clashes also broke out at Sopore. A police official said the day passed off peacefully across the Valley.(GNS)
