The Union Minister of State for Culture (Independent Charge), Tourism (Independent Charge) and Civil Aviation, Dr Mahesh Sharma released a film titled “Shesher Kobita” at a function organized in New Delhi today. The film was commissioned as a part of 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Rabindranath Tagore. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Mahesh Sharma said that Guru Rabindranath Tagore was a great philosopher, thinker and reformer. He has established India’s identity in the world. He has contributed by taking India’s culture to the corners of world. Dr Mahesh Sharma said that this film is a tribute to the great man. He also thanked the people associated with the direction and production of this film. This film is a holistic film completed with the assistance from Ministry of Culture and NFDC. He also said that this film will take Guru Rabindranath Tagore’s message of humanity to the world.

The film is based on the novel “Shesher Kobita” of Rabindranath Tagore. The novel is considered a landmark in Bengali Literature. The film recounts the love story of Amit Ray, a barrister educated at Oxford, whose virulent intellectualism reveals itself in its opposition to all forms of tradition. He meets Labanya in a car accident and the romance builds up in the misty hills of Shillong. Amit’s iconoclasm, meets Labanya’s sincere simplicity and sharp intelligence. After building up their affair with fervent passion, the lovers decide to marry other suitors, without the air of tragedy. Apparently they feel that daily chores of living together will nullify the attraction of their romance.

Amit marries Ketaki, his girlfriend from Oxford and Labanya marries Sovonlal, her friend from university days. But Amit resolves this enigma of ungratified marriage in his own unconventional logic. Labanya releases Amit’s own submerged depth of sincerity, which he finds hard to adjust to. The tragedy is understood by the girl who liberates him from his betrothal and disappears from his life. The film has been produced by Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India. The screenplay and Direction is by Suman Mukhopadhyay. The cast of the film includes Rahul Bose and Konkona Sen Sharma in the lead roles. Secretary, Ministry of Culture,  Narendra Kumar Sinha and other senior Officials were present on the occasion.
