Sukhnag and Tangnar Water Supply Schemes (WSS) would be commissioned from August and September this year respectively which can improve water supply to Srinagar city especially Nowgam, Naikbagh, Rawalpora, Bagh e Mehtab, Mahjoor Nagar, Natipora, Rambagh, Barzulla, Chanpora, Sanatnagar, Hyderpora, Maharaja Bazaar, Lalmandi, Hazuri Bagh and its adjacent areas of Amirakadal constituency. Rs. 269 crore schemes are at the last stage of completion and would benefit about 6 lakh souls.This information was given at an officers meeting convened by the Minister for R&B, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari  to review the water supply position of Srinagar district particularly Amirakadal constituency.

Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Shukhnandan Kumar Choudhary, Chief Engineer PHE, besides senior officers of PHE and Master Plan were present on the occasion.

Giving details, the Chief Engineer said that Rs. 86 crore have been expended on Sukhnag water supply scheme out of total project cost of Rs. 121 crore while work is in full swing and will benefit 3 lakh souls. He said the scheme would be commissioned by next month.He said work is apace on Tangnar water supply scheme and is expected to be completed by September this year. He said Rs. 148.37 crore are being spent on the project and will benefit about 3 lakh souls on its completion.The PHE Minister instructed the authorities of PHE department to prepare a comprehensive plan for improving water supply in Srinagar city. He asked them to take necessary steps for upgradation of basic infrastructure in view of future needs of the people.

Altaf Bukhari asked the engineers of PHE department to lay pipes in those areas which are yet to be macadamized. He said water scarcity is an important issue and exhorted upon the officers to take necessary majors to resolve it. He asked them to maintain close coordination with the R&B department while laying pipes to minimize cutting of roads.R&B Minister said on completion of these schemes the people of those areas would get the benefit, who otherwise have to face difficulties in getting drinking water.
