The Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is encouraging farmers to diversify from conventional agriculture to horticulture to enhance their income. As part of this initiative, the Department of Horticulture is providing a subsidy of up to Rs 80,000 for setting up mushroom production units across the state under the State Plan Scheme.

Horticulture Minister Mohinder Bhagat disclosed that farmers can establish a small mushroom production unit at an estimated cost of Rs 2 lakh. Under the State Plan Scheme, the department provides a 40 percent subsidy, subject to a maximum of Rs 80,000, to eligible beneficiaries. He said that mushroom cultivation requires comparatively less land and water and offers an attractive income with a modest investment.

The Minister further said that a small mushroom production unit can be established in an area of around 1,800 square feet, enabling even small and marginal farmers to benefit from the scheme. He said that the Punjab Government is making every possible effort to further strengthen the horticulture sector and ensure a sustained increase in farmers' income through farmer-centric initiatives.

Explaining the procedure for availing the subsidy, Mr. Mohinder Bhagat said that interested farmers may contact their nearest District Horticulture Officer to apply under the State Plan Scheme. He added that the Department also provides technical guidance, training and all necessary support to help farmers successfully take up mushroom cultivation.
