Reacting sharply to the silence maintained by Congress MLAs over the events of June 1984 during the recent appearance of legislators from various political parties before Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party President Kewal Singh Dhillon said it was deeply unfortunate that not even a single Congress MLA chose to apologize for the 1984 attack despite being given an opportunity to speak.

Dhillon said that at the supreme religious seat, Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the Aam Aadmi Party government had been summoned by the Jathedar Sahib over the shortcomings in the Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Act 2026, there by fixing the government’s accountability. However, Congress chose to politicize even this sensitive issue.

He said that on such a historic occasion, the Congress party should have apologized for the 1984 attack. He questioned why none of the Congress MLAs who appeared before the Takht spoke even a single word about the attack carried out by the then Congress government on Sri Akal Takht Sahib in June 1984.

Dhillon said that the 1984 attack by the Congress government was an assault on the spiritual soul of the Sikh community—something no Sikh can ever forget. He said Congress MLAs had a historic opportunity, after 42 years, to express remorse over this sensitive chapter of their party’s history.

Had they wished, they could have sought some time from the Singh Sahib and expressed regret before the entire Sikh community for the events of June 1984. However, they did not even consider that necessary. This, he said, exposes their intent and mindset.

Dhillon further stated that, like Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party also failed to respect Sikh sentiments while framing the anti-sacrilege law, which is now evident to everyone. He said the people of Punjab and the entire Sikh community are watching and understanding everything, and that both Congress and AAP will receive an appropriate response from the people of Punjab for this dishonesty.
