June 25, 1975, is remembered as one of the darkest chapters in the history of Indian democracy, when the then Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, imposed the Emergency, curbing constitutional rights and attempting to suppress the voice of the people.

On this occasion, BJP Punjab State Treasurer Sukhwinder Singh Goldy said that during the Emergency, thousands of political leaders, social activists, and journalists were imprisoned. Freedom of the press was severely curtailed, and democratic institutions were weakened.

He said that many members of the Bharatiya Janata Party and individuals associated with its ideology fought courageously to safeguard democracy and endured imprisonment and hardships. He added that the day serves as an occasion to remember and pay tribute to all those defenders of democracy who ensured that the flame of democracy continued to burn in the country.

Sukhwinder Singh Goldy further said that it is essential to educate the younger generation about the history of the Emergency so that no form of authoritarian rule or dictatorial mindset is ever allowed to succeed in the future. He reaffirmed that the Bharatiya Janata Party remains committed to protecting the Constitution, democracy, and the unity and integrity of the nation.
