Deputy Commissioner Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal today reviewed the progress of the Rs 405-crore canal water-based surface water treatment project at Ablowal and issued strict directions to ensure its completion in all respects by September 30. During the inspection, Executive Engineer of the Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Vikas Dhawan, and Project Manager of Larsen & Toubro, Tabish Hashmi, briefed him about the progress of the project.

Thereafter, the Deputy Commissioner inspected roads excavated at various locations across the city for laying pipelines and directed officials to undertake their immediate restoration. Dr. Aggarwal stated that the Punjab Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is committed to making the water treatment plant operational at the earliest under this canal water-based water supply scheme, which is considered the future lifeline of Patiala city.

He reviewed the overall project, including underground service reservoirs, filtration units, motors, water tanks, and water distribution lines. He also directed the company to conduct an audit of the quality of work being executed.

The Deputy Commissioner also reviewed the laying of the 1200 mm diameter water supply pipeline near Thapar University, road works in the Tripuri area, and the ongoing road construction work on the service lane near the No. 22 Flyover. He instructed the Public Works Department, Municipal Corporation, Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board, and L&T to work in close coordination and complete all pending works within the stipulated timeline.

He further directed the Municipal Corporation to ensure that the restoration of damaged roads is completed before June 25 so that residents do not face inconvenience during the monsoon season. The Deputy Commissioner informed that under this important project, being implemented with Punjab Government’s share under the AMRUT Scheme, works are in the final stages for the construction of underground storage facilities with a capacity of 236 million litres, a water treatment plant of 115 million litres per day capacity, a 17.25 million litre clean water reservoir, laying of 300 kilometres of new pipelines across the city, and construction of 12 overhead water tanks and 16 underground reservoirs.
