Patiala Locomotive Works (PLW) achieved a significant milestone with the inauguration of its first passenger locomotive equipped with the advanced Kavach safety system. The locomotive was formally inaugurated by Sushil Kumar Srivastava, Principal Chief Administrative Officer, PLW.
Kavach is India’s indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system aimed at ensuring “Zero Accidents” in railway operations. The system automatically applies brakes if the loco pilot misses a signal or exceeds the permitted speed.
It also prevents head-on collisions and provides automatic whistle alerts at level crossings, thereby significantly enhancing operational safety. Speaking on the occasion, officials highlighted that the induction of Kavach-equipped locomotives marks an important step towards modernization and safer railway operations.
The initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ vision of adopting advanced indigenous technologies for passenger safety. Officers and staff of PLW were present during the inauguration ceremony. PLW has also announced that, henceforth, all passenger & goods locomotives manufactured at the workshop will be equipped with the Kavach system.
The occasion marked yet another proud achievement for Patiala Locomotive Works in strengthening the safety infrastructure of Indian Railways through indigenous innovation and technological advancement.
