The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Punjab will be carried out in a completely transparent manner, said Mrs. Anindita Mitra, Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab here today. She informed that the Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a notification today directing the conduct of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in the state.

Sharing further details in this regard, Mrs. Anindita Mitra said that under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will undertake door-to-door visits across Punjab from June 25 to July 24, 2026 for filling voter verification forms. "For this extensive exercise, the entire election machinery has been mobilised, including 24,453 BLOs, 2,476 Supervisors, 117 Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and 234 Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs)", informed the Chief Electoral Officer, adding that on average, each BLO has been assigned only around 300 households and nearly 1,200 voters for the SIR exercise.

She further said that all preparations for conducting the SIR in Punjab have been completed by the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab. Training of BLOs and other preparatory activities related to the revision exercise will be undertaken from June 15 to June 24, 2026. The Chief Electoral Officer categorically said that the primary objective of the exercise is to ensure inclusion of every eligible citizen in the electoral rolls while removing ineligible persons from the list.

"Possessing duplicate voter registrations is an offence under the Constitution of India and is punishable with imprisonment of up to one year", she added. Mrs. Mitra informed, all voters in the state will be required to submit forms under the SIR exercise, adding that under the Pre-SIR mapping undertaken by the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab, mapping of 1,79,56,656 voters has already been completed out of the total 2,14,57,160 voters in the state, accounting for 83.69 percent of the electorate.

She said that 89.58 percent mapping has been completed in rural areas of Punjab, while 73 percent mapping work has been completed in urban areas. Providing further information, she said that January 1, 2003 has been fixed as the qualifying date for the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

The rationalisation of polling stations will be completed by July 24, 2026 and the draft electoral roll will be published on July 31, 2026, said Mrs. Anindita Mitra. She informed that claims and objections regarding the electoral rolls may be submitted from July 31 to August 30, 2026, while disposal of claims and objections will continue from July 31 to September 28, 2026.

The Chief Electoral Officer informed that the final publication of electoral rolls will take place on October 1, 2026. Mrs. Anindita Mitra urged all voters in Punjab to extend full cooperation to BLOs during the Special Intensive Revision being conducted by the Election Commission of India.

She also informed that for the convenience of voters, the electoral rolls with qualifying date January 1, 2003 have been linked with the current electoral rolls, ensuring that voters do not face any difficulty in tracing previous electoral records. Mrs. Mitra further informed that BLOs will visit households door-to-door for filling of forms related to the Special Intensive Revision and will make up to three visits to contact voters for retrieval of forms.

She clarified that during the SIR process, Aadhaar Card will be accepted only as a source of identification and not as proof of citizenship. The Chief Electoral Officer appealed to all political parties in Punjab to appoint their Booth Level Agents (BLAs) to facilitate smooth conduct of the exercise.

She said that political parties will be involved at every stage of the Special Intensive Revision process by the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab. In this connection, she informed that a meeting with political parties of the state will be held on May 15, 2026 to brief them in detail regarding the entire SIR exercise.
