In a major crackdown on drug trafficking in Assam's Barak Valley, Silchar Sadar Police have arrested two alleged traffickers and seized a substantial quantity of heroin valued at nearly Rs 2.3 crore, officials said on Wednesday. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a police team launched a targeted operation in the Ramnagar Bypass area of Silchar.

During the operation, officials intercepted a four-wheeler bearing registration number MZ 01F 6064 and carried out a detailed search of the vehicle. The search led to the recovery of around 456 grams of heroin concealed in 39 soap cases hidden chamber.

Police sources indicated that the seized contraband is estimated to have a market value of about Rs 2.3 crore in the illegal drug trade. The two accused have been identified as Fahim Ahmed Barbhuiya and Hanif Ahmed Laskar. Preliminary investigation suggests that the duo was transporting the contraband from the neighbouring state of Mizoram, using the route through Silchar to distribute the consignment to other parts of the country.

Cachar Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), Rajat Kumar Pal, said that the operation was conducted under the leadership of the Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjib Saikia, with active participation from the Additional SP and Officer-in-Charge of Silchar Sadar Police Station, and personnel from Tarapur Police Station.

He added that the accused are currently being subjected to intensive questioning to ascertain the broader network involved in the trafficking operation. Investigators are probing possible links to interstate drug syndicates and are working to identify other individuals connected to the racket.

Police officials reiterated their commitment to curbing the menace of drug trafficking in the region and emphasised that strict legal action would be taken against all those found involved. Further investigation in the case is underway.
