S. Hardeep Singh Gill, Vice-Chairperson of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) visited the Guru Nanak Dev University to review measures taken by the university for the appointment, promotion and welfare of its sanitation workers. National Commission for Safai Karamcharis is the apex body mandated to recommend welfare programmes, monitor rehabilitation schemes, investigate grievances and advise governments on improving working conditions and social security for sanitation workers.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Karamjeet Singh accorded a warm welcome to S. Hardeep Singh Gill on arrival at the university. During the special meeting held at Vice Chancellor Office, Prof. Karamjeet Singh briefed him about the university’s key achievements and elaborated on the various initiatives undertaken from time to time for the welfare of sanitation workers and other employees.
Prof. Karamjeet Singh reiterated that the university is fully committed to the welfare of its employees and will continue to take more effective measures at its level to ensure better facilities and safety for them. On this occasion, S. Hardeep Singh Gill described the interaction with the administration as a positive step towards the welfare of sanitation workers.
He said that detailed discussions were held with Vice-Chancellor Prof. Karamjeet Singh and other senior officials on key staff-related issues. S. Gill expressed satisfaction over the assurances given by the university administration and hoped that the decisions taken would be implemented effectively at the ground level at the earliest.
He announced that in future programmes, awareness camps would be organised for employees, the grievance redressal mechanism would be strengthened, and special efforts would be made to improve working conditions and social security benefits. He added that specific schemes for the welfare of sanitation workers would be prepared in collaboration with the Commission. He reiterated that he would continue making sustained efforts to safeguard the rights and welfare of employees.
