The Rakhigarhi Museum will bring the lifestyle of ancient civilizations to life through the use of advanced multimedia technology, offering visitors an immersive and unique experience. A meeting to discuss the future plans of the museum was held under the chairmanship of Dr. Amit Agrawal, Commissioner and Secretary, Heritage and Tourism Department in Hisar today.
Dr. Amit Agrawal stated that the Central and Haryana governments have jointly prepared a comprehensive project to position Rakhi Garhi on the global heritage map. The project will incorporate cutting-edge technologies such as virtual reality, 3D projection, and interactive displays.
The museum will showcase approximately 5,000-year-old artifacts from the Indus Valley Civilization, including pottery, jewellery, tools, terracotta objects, conch shells and copper implements, seals, human skeletons, and other objects of daily use. To develop Rakhigarhi as a world-class tourist destination, several visitor-centric facilities are being planned, including a dedicated kids’ zone, an open-air theatre, a modern library, a café, a hostel, and other tourism infrastructure.
These facilities will present history in an engaging and accessible manner for visitors of all age groups. A photo laboratory is also being developed to display glimpses of Harappan civilization, while an interactive kids’ zone will help connect children with history through hands-on activities.
The open-air theatre will host history- and culture-related programmes, and the modern library will serve as a resource to engage the younger generation. New technologies will be used to effectively explain the relationship between the artifacts and the archaeological site, with the objective of developing Rakhi Garhi into a globally recognized archaeological and tourism hub.
The project is also expected to generate employment opportunities for local youth. Following the meeting, Dr. Amit Agrawal visited the world-renowned archaeological site of Rakhigarhi. He conducted a detailed inspection of Mound Number One and Mound Number Three, observing Harappan-era raw and baked bricks, remains of mud houses, and other significant antiquities unearthed during excavations.
He also visited the temporary museum at Mound Number One, where he reviewed the displayed artifacts and held detailed discussions with officials regarding their preservation, presentation, and improved dissemination of information to tourists. The Commissioner and Secretary directed the officials to expedite all proposed works and ensure that development and conservation activities are completed in a time-bound manner through effective coordination.
On the occasion, Dr. Narendra Parmar, Deputy Director, Archaeology and Museums Department, informed that a proposal has been prepared for the construction of a protective shed at Mound Number One to safeguard the excavation area from adverse weather conditions. He also stated that a proposal is underway to extend the existing shed at Mound Number Three to enhance the preservation of antiquities.
Director of the Department Amit Khatri, and other officers from the concerned departments were present during the visit.
