A one-day seminar on the Energy Management Systems (IS/ISO 50001:2018) was successfully conducted by the Northern Regional Office, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in association with the Energy Management Cell/SDA Chandigarh, at Hotel Hometel, Chandigarh. The workshop was organized with the objective of promoting structured and standardized energy management practices for Industries & Government Organizations.
The programme aimed at creating awareness and enhancing the technical capacity of stakeholders regarding the implementation of ISO 50001, which provides a systematic framework for improving energy performance, optimizing energy use, reducing costs, and minimizing environmental impact. Sh. Satish Kumar Gupta, Former Deputy Director General, BIS, delivered an extensive technical session highlighting the core requirements of IS/ISO 50001, including energy planning, performance monitoring, measurement, documentation, internal audits, and continual improvement.
Sh. Pawan Kumar Sharma, Executive Engineer-cum-Head, Energy Management Cell/SDA, apprised the participants of the various initiatives undertaken by the Chandigarh Administration in the field of energy conservation and energy efficiency. He emphasized the importance of institutionalizing energy management practices and encouraged all participants to implement the Energy Management System in their respective establishments for long-term sustainability and compliance.
Officials from Chandigarh Administration like Engineering Department, Transport Department, Industries Department; and other Government departments of Punjab, Haryana along with representatives from Industries, MSMEs & other private establishments, actively participated in the workshop. Approximately 75 participants attended the programme.
The workshop featured interactive discussions and practical insights, enabling participants to clearly understand the benefits of ISO 50001 adoption and its role in strengthening organizational energy efficiency and sustainability goals. The workshop concluded with a question-and-answer session, during which queries raised by the participants were addressed by subject experts.
The event reaffirmed the commitment of the Bureau of Indian Standards and the Energy Management Cell towards promoting standardized energy management practices and supporting India’s national objectives on energy efficiency, sustainability, and climate action.
