The Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC), in collaboration with the Global Youth Federation and M/s Karo Sambhav Pvt. Ltd., organized a successful Community Engagement Meeting today to establish a collaborative framework for responsible e-waste management in the city. The meeting was chaired by Sh. Saurabh Kumar, IFS, Member Secretary, CPCC, and included representatives from schools, colleges, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), and Market Welfare Associations (MWAs).
During the meeting different aspects of e-waste management like e-waste types, present scenario in India and Chandigarh, harmful effects in case of disposal through unorganised sector, benefits of proper disposal etc. were discussed. Participants were briefed about the collection system in Chandigarh and informed about the contact numbers in which any resident can call for the disposal of e-waste.
Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee is conducting special awareness and collection drives for better and effective management of e-waste.
1. Awareness Sessions: E-waste awareness sessions are being conducted in schools, colleges, and RWAs to educate the public on the detrimental impacts of informal disposal (through unorganized scrap dealers) and to promote management through the formal, authorized sector.
2. 15-Day Collection Drive: A special 15-day e-waste collection drive is being conducted to cover all sectors of Chandigarh, with the Global Youth Federation and Karo Sambhav operating a dedicated mobile van collection service to ensure safe and scientific recycling.
CPCC is going to include more collection agencies for e-waste collection in Chandigarh for better and timely collection of e-waste and awareness is being created through social media involving RWA’a and MWA’s. RWA’a and MWA’s showed commitment to work together with the department to make the community a model for sustainable e-waste management.
