Under Seva Parv campaign and with the aim of spreading awareness on the ill effects of drug abuse and the challenges of illicit trafficking, district administration Shopian today organized a district level seminar on ‘Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ at Government Degree College, here.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shopian, Shishir Gupta was the chief guest on the occasion. In his address, he pointed out that drug addiction is not only a serious health hazard but also a social and economic problem that weakens communities and demands strict implementation of multi pronged strategy across all sectors and stakeholders to curb it.

He called upon teachers, parents and religious leaders to play a proactive role in guiding youth towards positive endeavours and appealed for joining hands with district administration and supporting in curbing this menace completely in the district.

SSP, Shopian, Anayat Ali underlined the strict enforcement measures being taken against drug peddlers and traffickers in the district and appealed to the public, especially youth, to become partners in the fight against drug abuse by supporting police in its efforts to dismantle drug networks.

Other speakers on the occasion highlighted the ill effects and ramifications of drugs for the social and economic health of society, and deliberated on the role of all stakeholders to save the young from the addiction.

On the occasion, DIPR Shopian and Cultural Unit, DIPR Kashmir sponsored skit and poetic performances on drugs, and distributed Surya Ghar IEC material among participants. Other cultural performances, skits of school children, presentation of Sqay Martial arts were highlights of the day, all emphasizing the importance of a drug-free lifestyle.

ADDC, Dr. Nasir Ahmed Lone; ADC Dr. Zakir Hussain Faaz; Principal, GDC, Prof. Mohammed Shafiq; GM, DIC, Shurjil Naik; DIO, CMO, CEO MC, other district officers, traders representatives, civil society members, teachers and students participated in the event.
