The Central University of Punjab marked World Earth Day with an engaging and insightful Earth and Environment Awareness Programme, bringing together students, faculty, and experts to celebrate and reflect upon environmental stewardship. The event featured expert lectures, a tree plantation drive, exhibitions, and a range of competitive activities.
The event commenced with a symbolic plant watering, led by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. R.P. Tiwari, along with Prof. Yogalakshmi (Dean, School of Environment and Earth Sciences), Dr. Shruti Kanga (Head, Dept. of Geography), Prof. K.K. Singh (Head, Dept. of Geology), Prof. Anjana Munshi (Director, Research Cell), Prof. Monisha Dhiman (Director, IQAC), and other distinguished faculty members. This act reflected the university’s collective commitment to ecological preservation.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, in his keynote address, described Earth as a nurturing mother of all life forms and underscored the moral responsibility of humane civilization to protect natural resources. He encouraged the judicious use of water, the conservation of both renewable and non-renewable resources, and inclusive development. He also advocated for plantation drives to improve air quality and urged the audience to care for all forms of life.
He concluded with the message: “Energy is our power, and we must strive to enhance it.” Prof. Yogalakshmi K.N., in her welcome address, highlighted the urgency of environmental preservation and the vital role of tree plantation in securing a sustainable future. Prof. K.K. Singh appreciated the student enthusiasm shown during the quiz competition and provided an engaging insight into various rock types to spark scientific interest among young minds.
Following the formal addresses, the guests visited a student exhibition showcasing scientific models and projects. The exhibition featured the work of over 130 students from various schools, and their creativity and dedication were warmly appreciated by the dignitaries.
A quiz competition was also held, with students participating enthusiastically and being commended for their knowledge and engagement. Expert lectures added depth to the programme. Dr. J.K. Singh delivered a comprehensive session on Earth System Sciences, focusing on the formation and classification of rocks and the evolution of life.
Dr. Bandana engaged the students with an informative and captivating lecture on dinosaurs’ evolution and extinction, which generated significant interest among the attendees. Following the lectures, a tree plantation drive was undertaken with enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and officials, reaffirming the university’s dedication to environmental action.
The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony, where students were awarded for their outstanding performance in various competitions.
