Guru Nanak Dev University marked a significant milestone today as Prof. Karamjeet Singh, an eminent academician and founder Vice Chancellor of Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University, Patiala formally assumed the position of Vice Chancellor. 

Prof. Palwinder Singh, Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. K.S. Kahlon, Registrar, Prof. Preet Mohinder Singh Bedi, Dean Student's Welfare and other officials were present on this occasion. Upon his arrival, Prof. Karamjeet Singh expressed his gratitude and shared his vision for taking the University ahead to mark its global presence. 

Earlier, on reaching the campus, Prof. Singh was warmly received by the University fraternity. In his address, Prof. Karamjeet Singh expressed his deep gratitude to Sri Guru Ramdas Ji, due to whose  blessings, he is able to serve this great University named after Guru Nanak Dev ji. 

He underscored the rich heritage of Guru Nanak Dev University, which has already established itself as a premier institution at the national level. He affirmed his commitment to enhancing this University's global presence by aligning its academic and research programs with global standards.

While talking about priorities for excellence, he emphasized the importance of integrating cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and introducing skill-based courses to equip students with employable and entrepreneurial capabilities. 

Acknowledging the pivotal role of research & innovation, he stressed the need to excel in both scientific and social sciences research, fostering innovation that addresses contemporary challenges. 

Inspired by the mission of Guru Nanak Dev Ji - Sarbat da Bhala (Welfare of All) Prof. Singh identified increasing Punjab's Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education as a key goal. Currently at 29.1%, his aim aligns with the Government of India's target achieving GER of 50%. 

He said that special focus will be given to extending online education to students in remote areas, as well as providing higher education opportunities to marginalized groups, including the downtrodden & underprivileged, differently-abled individuals, and jail inmates.

Prof. Singh underlined the University's responsibility to address societal problems and contribute to holistic community development. Recognizing the faculty as the backbone of any academic institution, he announced plans to strengthen their capacities by delegating powers and providing opportunities for professional development. 

To increase enrollment, especially in constituent colleges, GNDU will introduce more skill-based courses to align education with industry demands to generate revenue for the more smooth conduct of the day to day activities.

Prof. Singh reaffirmed his commitment to making Guru Nanak Dev University a beacon of excellence and inclusivity, ensuring that its students emerge as global leaders equipped with both knowledge and values. 

He sought the support & dedication from the collective efforts of faculty, staff, and students in achieving these objectives. On this occasion the faculty & staff members and other dignitaries extended their best wishes to Prof. Singh for his tenure as Vice Chancellor.

Life & Achievements       

Prof. Karamjeet Singh, an alumnus of GNDU, holds an illustrious career spanning over 38 years in teaching, research, training, and consultancy. Prior to this appointment, he served as the founding Vice-Chancellor of Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University, Patiala, where he laid a strong foundation for the institution.

His previous roles include being a Professor of Finance and Strategic Management at Panjab University, Chandigarh, where he also served as Registrar, Dean of multiple faculties, and Director of the Human Resource Development Centre. 

He has held significant administrative responsibilities, including serving on the Senate, Syndicate, and Academic Council. Decorated with numerous awards, Prof. Karamjeet Singh’s accolades include the Lifetime Achievement Award for Management and Leadership, Best Business Academic Award, and recognition from the University Grants Commission for organizing prestigious academic events. 

His leadership has extended to global academic collaborations, having been invited for engagements at institutions such as Wharton Business School (USA), University of London (UK), and Toronto (Canada).

Prof. Singh’s academic contributions are noteworthy not only in his field of finance but also on Sikh philosophy as he authored five books on Sikh Philosophy and religion, published 50 research papers in renowned journals. 

He has mentored 20 Ph.D. scholars in Management and Commerce and championed areas such as Corporate Governance, Strategic Management, and Spirituality in Management. As Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Karamjeet Singh envisions elevating GNDU’s global reputation by focusing on promoting vernacular languages, internationalizing education, introducing skill-based courses, and integrating the Indian Knowledge System. 

His agenda aligns with GNDU’s commitment to academic excellence and holistic development rooted in Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings. A recipient of numerous national and international recognitions, Prof. Singh’s appointment underscores GNDU’s dedication to fostering leadership that reflects academic brilliance and administrative expertise.

Prof. Karamjeet Singh’s connection to GNDU as an alumnus enhances his commitment to advancing the university’s mission and inspiring students to excel in both material and spiritual pursuits. His leadership marks a transformative chapter in GNDU’s journey toward academic and global prominence.
