Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), in collaboration with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), hosted a  workshop in Hyderabad aimed at advancing the adoption of energy-efficient technologies in India's industrial sector. This workshop is part of the ongoing project, ‘Creating and Sustaining Markets for Energy Efficiency,’ supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) under its GEF-6 cycle.

Since 2018, this project, implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), with EESL as the executing agency and the International Institute  for Energy Conservation (IIEC) as the co-executing agency, has focused on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by deploying energy-efficient technologies.

The current focus of the project includes key technologies such as waste heat recovery solutions, compressed air systems, heat pumps, turbo blowers, IE4 motors with VFDs, microturbines, industrial automation, and energy-efficient cooling solutions.

During the inaugural session, Mr. Ravichandran Purushothaman, Chairman of the CII Energy Efficiency Council and President of Danfoss Ltd, emphasized the proactive role industries must take in adopting innovative solutions to achieve operational excellence.

He stressed the importance of embracing cutting-edge technologies and energy-efficient practices to enhance productivity and reduce environmental impact. He urged industry leaders to explore new approaches and form partnerships that foster long-term sustainability while maintaining competitiveness in an evolving market.

Shyam Sunder, Director, BEE, highlighted BEE’s pivotal role in guiding industries toward improved energy efficiency and climate change mitigation. He emphasized the need for industries to adopt advanced technologies, despite potential risks.

The ADEETIE (Accelerating Demand for Energy-Efficient Technologies in Industrial Enterprises) scheme, launched by BEE, promotes energy-saving solutions by offering financial incentives, capacity-building  programs, and industry collaboration.

ADEETIE, along with the Perform, Achieve, and Trade (PAT) scheme, advances India's energy efficiency goals and sustainable industrial growth, with recent efforts focusing on supporting MSMEs through increased financial  guidance. Mr. Animesh Mishra, Chief General Manager and Head of Sales & CCPR at EESL, underscored energy efficiency as the most cost-effective energy source, citing its dual benefits for climate

savings and financial returns. He highlighted several successful programs initiated by EESL and their significant impact on industries and communities. He also mentioned that Demonstration of Energy Efficiency Projects (DEEP), along with other key programs, will soon be made accessible through EESLmart.in, offering an expanded platform for energy-efficient solutions in the near future.

Mr. Girja Shankar, General Manager (Technical) at EESL, discussed EESL’s portfolio of 11 energy-efficient technologies, of which 9 have been validated. These include Waste Heat Recovery  Systems (WHRS), IE4 motors, heat pumps, and industrial automation, all of which have been instrumental in improving energy performance across various sectors.

Mr. G. Sreenivasulu, Deputy Executive Engineer at the Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission (APSCEM), shared insights into the implementation of the PAT scheme in energy-intensive  industries. In Andhra Pradesh, 59 industries have collectively saved 1.16 million tonnes of oil equivalent, with further energy-saving measures being adopted in the thermal power sector.

Mr. Sanjay Dube, CEO & President of IIEC, discussed IIEC’s progress under the project and urged participants to engage in an extensive feasibility study being conducted by EESL across industries to identify technologies that promise significant energy savings.

The event also saw the release of the Demonstration of Energy Efficiency Projects (DEEP) Program brochure, an initiative by BEE and EESL. This program aims to showcase 8 innovative technologies across 27 designated consumers in the PAT sector, technologies that have not yet been commercialized on a large scale but offer significant potential for energy efficiency improvements.

The workshop brought together over 100 industry stakeholders, including government officials, industry associations, technology providers, and experts, to further India’s progress towards net-zero emissions. The workshop series will continue across various cities in India, reinforcing the mission to enhance energy efficiency and supporting the industrial sector in its transition toward sustainable

practices.
