In a remarkable display of compassion and transcending borders, Dr. S. P. Singh Oberoi, the renowned Sikh businessman from Dubai and founder of Sarbat Da Bhala Charitable Trust, has successfully intervened to spare the lives of six Pakistani youths. The life-saving act comes in the backdrop of a murder case involving a young man from Jalandhar district.
Dr. Oberoi shared that the incident dates back to May 22, 2019, when Kuldeep Singh, son of Rajinder Singh from Basti Bawa Khel in Jalandhar, was tragically killed in Sharjah (Dubai). Subsequently, six Pakistani youths, including Ali Hussain, Muhammad Shakir, Aftab, Ghulam, Muhammad Kamran, Muhammad Omir Wahid, and Syed Hasan Shah, faced the death penalty.
Upon being contacted by the families of the Pakistani youths, Dr. Oberoi engaged with Kuldeep Singh's family to explore the possibility of sparing the lives of the Pakistani youths through the payment of blood money, as per the law in Gulf countries.
However, complications arose due to mutual differences within Kuldeep's family, particularly involving his wife, Kirandeep Kaur, who had separated from the in-laws and relocated to her ancestral village. Despite multiple attempts at reconciliation, the families couldn't reach a decision.
In Gulf countries, it is possible to commute the sentence of a guilty party if the victim's family agrees, and money is deposited in the court. In this case, Dr. Oberoi, through his legal team, fought for the lives of the six Pakistani youths and deposited 2 lakh 10 thousand drams (approximately 48 lakh Indian rupees) in the court.
The court, acknowledging the blood money, pardoned the punishment of all six Pakistani youths, and the release papers have been sent to the prison department. These young individuals are expected to return home safely in the coming days.
While Dr. Oberoi spearheaded the legal battle, the entire amount deposited in the court was provided by the families of the convicted Pakistani youths. Shabir Ahmed Manzoor, the father of Ali Hussain, played a crucial role in supporting the cause.
Dr. Oberoi emphasized that, even today, if there is a mutual agreement between the victim's family, he is committed to assisting them in paying the amount deposited in the court. According to Shariat law, if the family agrees, the amount will be distributed equally among Kuldeep's father, Rajinder Singh, mother, Jaswinder Kaur, wife, Kirandeep Kaur, son, Prabhadeep Singh, and brother, Lakhvir Singh.
Dr. Oberoi, reiterating his commitment to humanitarian values, clarified that he sees humanity before any considerations of caste, religion, color, or race. Notably, his assistance is not extended to criminals involved in murder, drug dealing, or rape. The efforts of Dr. S. P. Singh Oberoi have, to date, spared 135 individuals from facing the death penalty or prolonged sentences of 45 years.
