Field Visits of School Students regarding sustainable waste management practices continue

Sustainability Leaders program aligns with the 'Swacchata hi Sewa' campaign, says Commissioner Navjot Kaur

Over 55 students from the two Government Schools in Village Boothgarh, today embarked on field trips to various sites to learn about the Municipal Corporation Mohali's waste management efforts. During the excursion, they visited the Nature Park to witness horticultural waste composting, RMC-3A to see compost pits for kitchen waste, waste shredding and bailing machines, coconut shredding, and the cattle pond to observe vermi composting and the creation of dung logs for crematoriums, which reduces the need for tree wood. 

The shredded coconut shells are also being added to the dung logs which serve as fuel and used to improve waste management system. Navjot Kaur, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, highlighted that the Sustainability Leaders program aligns with the 'Swacchata hi Sewa' campaign, aimed at sensitising students to be change-makers in the Clean India Mission as the youth is the future of the country.

The program includes live sessions, webinars, field visits, and innovative projects, helping students develop a strong connection to waste management and fostering responsible citizenship. Ms. Ginni Duggal, District Education Officer, mentioned that they have targeted over 1000 students for the field visits, and taking 50-100 students every day. Later, students will be assigned activities based on their field experiences.

The Sustainability Leaders Program is a structured internship program, designed by Suhani Sharma, Class XI student of Delhi Public School, Chandigarh, launched, last month, by the Deputy Commissioner, SAS Nagar, Aashika Jain for students of grades 8th-12th. 1150 students from 21 schools have already registered for the program. Preeti Bansal, the coordinator from Education Department informed that this week students from Hoshiarpur, Mundho Sangtian, Ranimajra and Khizrabad schools are going for the field visits.

More than 600 students of Government Senior Secondary School Phase 11, Government Girls Senior Secondary School Sohana, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Kharar, Government Senior Secondary School Teera, Government Senior Secondary School Nawanshahr Badala, Government Senior Secondary School, Mauli Bedwan, Government Senior Secondary School Mullanpur, Government Senior Secondary School Manauli, Government Senior Secondary School Bahlolpur,  have done field visits. 

It is a clear example of learning from the environment and giving back to the nature. On this field visit Mrs. Vandana Sukhija Community Facilitator, Dr. Varinder Kaur SWM Expert and Mrs. Arzoo Tanwar IEC & CB Expert were also present.
