The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) during its ongoing campaign against corruption in the state, on Wednesday arrested a Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Jagjeet Singh (No: 462/Khanna), posted at PS Malaud in Police district Khanna, while accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000.Disclosing this here today a spokesperson of the state VB informed that said police official has been arrested on the complaint of Hardeep Singh, resident of Village Shekhan, Tehsil Payal.

He further added that the the said complainant has approached the VB range office in Ludhiana and recorded a statement alleging that on September 28, 2023, his brother, Jagtar Singh, had visited the Civil Hospital Malaud to collect medicine from the drug De-Addiction center on his motorcycle with registration number PB-10-HY-4663. In the afternoon, they discovered that a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) case was registered at PS Malaud against his brother Jagtar Singh.

Thereafter, the complainant along with Paramjit Singh, from his village visited the police station and met the above said SI who informed them that a FIR 101 dated September 28, 2023, under section 22 of the NDPS Act had been filed against Jagtar Singh. The complainant further alleged that the SI Jagjeet Singh threatened to implicate him also in this case and had already taken a bribe of Rs 15,000 from him.

Furthermore, SI Jagjeet Singh informed them that the motorcycle had not been included in the case yet and implied that, for a sum of Rs 20,000 in bribes, he would ensure the motorcycle remained unimplicated in the case. Unwilling to succumb to bribery, the complainant, Hardeep Singh, decided to approach the VB Range office Ludhiana, he added.

The spokesperson further informed that after a preliminary inquiry the VB team laid a trap, resulting in the red-handed arrest of SI Jagjeet Singh while accepting bribe of Rs 20,000 in the presence of two official witnesses. In this regard, a case under FIR 25 dated October 4, 2023, under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, has been registered at police station VB range Ludhiana against the said police personnel.
