Punjabi Lok Virasat Academy Ludhiana on Saturday honoured Punjab Farmers and Agricultural Workers Commission Chairman and noted economist Dr. Sukhpal Singh and MLA Jagraon Sarvjit Kaur Manuke along with her husband Prof. Sukhwinder Singh.

Providing further information, Chairman of Punjabi Lok Virasat Academy Prof. Gurbhajan Singh Gill said that Dr. Sukhpal Singh was a renowned economist and agriculturist who had published several research reports on rural indebtedness, farmer suicides, indebtedness of agricultural workers and Punjabi farmers who had left agriculture in last two decades and researches were praised at national and international levels. 

Dr Sukhpal after completing his doctorate in MA Economics from Punjabi University, he first taught in SD College Barnala for some time and then came to Punjab Agricultural University. Gill said that the Punjab government had taken farsighted decision by appointing Dr Sukhpal as head of the commission.

Gill further said that Sarvjit Kaur Manuke was like his daughter because she was a dear student of his late wife Prof. Nirpjit Kaur in 1993 in Ramgarhia Girls College. Becoming an MLA from Jagraon for the second time, Jagraon had witnessed unprecedented development.

Addressing the gathering, Sarvjit Kaur Manuke said that the state government had given its permission to construct a new bridge on Jagraon-Raikot road besides Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial, ITI, Aarhtiya Bhawan, sports stadium and indoor stadium and many development projects were in pipeline.

Speaking on this occasion, IPS (rtd) Gurpreet Singh Toor congratulated over sanction of new bridge and suggested that the Akhara bridge had historical importance as great Punjabi poet Babu Rajab Ali ji had spent most of his time in a house near this bridge. He said that area can also be developed as a tourist destination in his memory.

Dr. Sukhpal Singh expressed his gratitude and said that he will try to live up to the expectations.Former President of Punjabi Sahit Academy Prof. Ravinder Singh Bhathal, President of PAU Teachers Association Harmeet Singh Kingra, Jagdishpal Singh Grewal Sarpanch Daad, Jaswinder Kaur Gill and Kuldeep Kaur Gill were present on this occasion.
