The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today assured farmers of Majri block in this district that the party would not allow them to be dispossessed of their land unlawfully by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and would extend all help to them, including legal help.

Senior party leader Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra, who interacted with farmers at Chottipur Nagal village where they complained that the government had taken over 2822 acres of land without giving them any notice or conducting any legal proceedings, said the government should shun such cheap politics and instead should take action against those who had gobbled government land worth hundreds of crores.

“The government should take action against former minister Balbir Sidhu who has taken over eleven acres of prime land in Mohali by creating a fake trust as well as Lovely University which has usurped panchayat land”.

Giving details, Prof Chandumajra said farmers told him that while the original owners of the land which had been taken over by the government were in possession of it since 1944; others had purchased it in 1990-92.

He said there was clear proof that the land in question belonged to farmers with many owning it for generations while others had purchased it through registered deeds. “The farmers have got ownership rights over this land through relevant courts and dispossessing them by passing partisan orders is illegal and is liable to be struck down by the courts”. Prof Chandumajr said he had offered the affected farmers both legal as well as any other help they required to fight the injustice done to them.

The SAD leader also asked the AAP government and chief minister Bhagwant Mann not to resort to cheap headlines but instead tackle and resolve the real issues of Punjab. He said the AAP government had become adept at diverting the attention of the people from real issues like lack of law and order, inability to provide jobs to the youth and even non-fulfillment of poll promises like giving Rs one thousand per month to all women by coming up with such non-issues.

Asserting that no takeover of private land was possible without following proper procedure, Prof Chandumajra assured affected farmers that they would not be dispossessed of their land. He was accompanied by Charanjit Singh Kalewal, Manjit Singh Muddon, Sarabjit Singh Kadimajra, Hardeep Singh Kheerabad, Dalbagh Siongh and Jagir Ram besides others. EOM
