This day was started by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 1987. Tobacco use is very injurious to health. Intoxication of tobacco, cigarette causes heavy damage to the lungs. In view of the continuous and rapid increase in the number of deaths due to tobacco use, the World Health Organization (WHO) started celebrating World No Tobacco Day in the year 1987. Although this day was celebrated for the first time on 7 April 1988, a resolution was passed on 31 May 1988 and since then this day has been celebrated every year on 31 May.

What do the figures say?
Indirectly kids are also suffering from this, as the number of women smokers is also rising. If we consider the data produced by the Global Adult Tobacco Survey, 2009-10, about 35 percent of Indians use tobacco in some form or the other, out of which 47 percent are men and 20.2% are women, which is a serious issue and generating impact on kids as well.

Women smokers are rising in tobacco consumption:
Lung cancer, heart attack, respiratory disease, reproductive disorders, pneumonia, menstrual problems are more in women due to tobacco consumption. About 35 percent of Indians use tobacco in some way or the other. Of these, 47 percent are men and 20.2% are women.
Rapid growth of e-cigarette products:
Over the last decade, e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products have become increasingly popular in many countries, including, worryingly, among youth and non-smokers. There has been rapid growth across the spectrum of e-cigarette products, which include disposables, devices with replaceable cartridges, and user-modifiable “open” or “tank” systems.
Respiratory system is affected by promoting blood pressure:
Nicotine from tobacco also increases blood pressure. When you smoke, its smoke affects the entire respiratory system. It increases the chances of getting cancer of the mouth, eyes, ears and lungs.
