The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab has stated that the weekly lockdown and night curfew imposed in the state imposition by the Amarinder Singh government in the name of containing the spread of coronavirus was completely irrational, alleging the night curfew had been clamped to facilitating sand mafia, and give free run to drug and liquor smugglers.Interacting with the media on Friday, Leader of Opposition Harpal Singh Cheema and Jarnail Singh, in-charge of Punjab affairs, and Deputy Leader of Opposition Sarabjit Kaur Manuke said it was preposterous to impose weekly lockdown and night curfew in the name of curbing the spread of the epidemic. The AAP leaders added that the steps being taken by the Punjab government were more shocking than surprising, saying the government imposed weekly lockdown on Saturdays and Sundays and daily curfew between 7 pm and 5 am was beyond anybody’s comprehension.Harpal Singh Cheema alleged that the night curfew was imposed not to fight the big battle against Corona but facilitating the sand mafia, drug and liquor smuggling in the state by the who’s who of the power that are under the protective patronage of the Chief Minister.
Referring to the steps taken by the Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi to curb the outbreak of corona pandemic, Jarnail Singh said that the curfew/ lockdown could be scientifically beneficial only if it was implemented for at least 14 days, during which the governments in the saddle ramped up the necessary arrangements. He said the Amarinder Singh government was the first in the country to pat its back by imposing curfew, adding that it initiated no steps to check the spread of the corona, like ameliorating the lot of the govt hospitals and corona care centres and putting in place other facilities, like provision of ventilators, beds, et al which was why the situation had gone out of control in Punjab.According to Jarnail Singh, the corona struck in Delhi in a far more severe way than it did in Punjab due to the density of population there, being the country's capital with thousands visiting it from home and abroad. He said the Delhi government took every possible care and circumspection and fought back the killer virus with all seriousness it merited, saying there were only 11,271 corona positive cases in Delhi while in Punjab the number stood at 13,830.Jarnail Singh added that in Delhi, more than 14 lakh tests had been conducted while in Punjab only 8 lakh 40 thousand tests were done till date, saying due to better facilities at government hospitals and corona care centers in Delhi, the recovery rate was 90.1 per cent while in Punjab it is 60.9 per cent only. The AAP leaders urged the chief minister Amarinder Singh to step out of his sprawling Siswan farmhouse and adopt the Delhi model to effectively fight the corona epidemic wreaking havoc on precious lives.
