The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today thanked the Congress government and chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh for recognizing the work done by the former SAD-BJP and NDA governments in getting the prestigious IIM project to the holy city and advised him to work on getting similar institutions to Punjab instead of engaging in ‘repackaging’ exercises to claim credit where none was due.The SAD also reiterated the request made by union food processing industries minister to dedicated IIM, Amritsar to Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji and said this would be a befitting tribute to Guru Sahab on his 550th Parkash Purb.In a statement here, SAD leaders Bikram Singh Majithia and Gulzar Singh Ranike said it was good that the chief minister had acknowledged the service rendered by former finance minister Arun Jaitely by approving the IIM for Amritsar. He said the institution was passed in the very first budget of the NDA- 1 government following which the foundation stone of the institution was laid by Mr Arun Jaitely on June 20,2016 in the presence of then chief minister S Parkash Singh Badal, then deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal, cabinet minister Smriti Irani and senior SAD and BJP leadership. The SAD leaders said it was good that the chief minister was acknowledging the good work of the SAD-BJP government as he had done in the past also by lauding the efforts of S Sukhbir Singh Badal in creating the Invest Punjab department which had brought immense investment into the State before corporate honchos in Mumbai or terming the Jang-i-Azadi and War Museums envisaged by S Parkash Singh Badal as world class monuments. “However the Congress government and the chief minister also need to do something. The Congress government should have something to show as its achievement however small it may be. Simply getting pictures clicked besides works done by the SAD-BJP and NDA governments won’t achieve anything. The Congress government needs to also work to create world class institutions like IIM and AIIMS, Bathinda. This is the least expected from an elected government”, the leaders added.Mr Majithia and Mr Ranike meanwhile extended a cordial welcome to Human Resource Development minister Ramesh Pokhariyal on his visit to the holy city to conduct the ground breaking ceremony of IIM. The leaders said it was a matter of pride that Punjab was being given priority in the NDA government after ten years of neglect during Sonia Gandhi led UPA rule. The SAD leaders while thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sanctioning top education institutions for Punjab, also thanked him for working to resolve the long pending issues of Punjabis be it creating a SIT to reinvestigate 1984 killings committed by Congressmen, refunding GST on langar, erasing the secret black list of Sikh foreign nationals created by the Congress, releasing Sikh prisoners in jail after the end of their life terms and establishing the Kartarpur Corridor.
