An Intercollegiate Symposium on “Environmental and Health Hazards of Single use Plastics” was today organized here at Govt. Degree College Kathua in collaboration with District Administration. In all ten students from GDC Kathua, GCW Kathua, GDC Billawar, GDC Hiranagar and GDC Basholi took part in the symposium.Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Raghav Langer was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Assistant Commissioner Development, Sukhpal Singh was the guest of honor on this occasion. DEPO, Aruna Sharma was also present along with faculty members and students of the college.  In his Inaugural address Dr. Langer laid emphasis on complete shunning of single use plastics. He said that plastic waste clogs drains causing floods and breeding diseases. He said that plastic has become greatest threat to the environment and there is impeding need to stop its use.He further explained that social mobilization or community mobilization can`t be achieved till every stakeholder participates and the same is needed to generate awareness regarding no plastic use.“Students are the change agents, they are brand ambassadors of our society and they can play active role in generating awareness regarding harmful effects of single use plastic in our life and our environment,” DC asserted.Earlier, Principal of the college Prof. Assa Ram Sharma presented a welcome note. He also thanked District Administration for providing a golden opportunity to GDC Kathua to organize this event.Skilva Mahotra from GCW Kathua,   Manaya Mahajan from GDC  Billawar and Naman Dogra from GDC Kathua were adjudged First, Second and third respectively.Prof Ruth Masih, Dr. Deepshikha, and Prof Rakesh Singh from GCW Kathua acted as judges.The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Prof Sumnesh Jasrotia and Prof Shikha. Vote of thanks was presented by Dr. P.K. Rao.Another highlight of the day was a poster making competition on “Environmental and Health  Hazards of Single  use of Plastics” organized by Ravi Eco Club of the college in collaboration with Department of Environmental Sciences.Sakshi Bhau ,   Pooja Sarmal and   Shivani were adjudged   first , second and third respectively. Display of Models by the educational institutions of Kathua was another activity of the day. The participating institutions were GDC Kathua, GHS Khanpur, MS Kathua B, GHSS Chak Kana School, Spring Dales School Kathua, GHS Lacchipur, High School Kadyala and Learning temple School Kathua.Government High School Khanpur Zone Marheen secured first position.The entire programme was conducted under the supervision of NSS Programme officers of the college Prof Manmohan Singh and Prof Ritu Kumar Sharma.
