Heavy rain measuring about 196 mm till Wednesday morning lashed the city inundating several localities and leading to traffic snarls on arterial roads, weather officials said."The city received heavy rainfall on Wednesday with a few areas receiving a maximum rainfall of 196 mm as recorded at 8.30 a.m.," an official from the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) told IANS here."An east-west shear zone is prevailing over the region at 5.8 km over the sea level, wherein winds from west to south and east to north converge to cause instability, thereby leading to rain," Sundar M. Metri, the Bengaluru chief of the India Meteorological Department told IANS.The heavy rain which began on Tuesday night led to storm water drains overflowing onto the roads in several localities, leading to water-logging. Even upscale suburbs like Koramangala and Jayanagar witnessed flash floods as the drains, filled with silt and filth, could not allow the passage of huge amounts of water quickly.Rainwater also entered several homes in many areas.Several trees in the city were uprooted by the heavy rainfall.According to KSNDMC officials, the rain is likely to continue in the city for the next three days. Many villages and towns in south interior Karnataka, especially in Mysuru region like Mandya, Bidadi, Srirangapatna and Channapatna, were badly affected due to the rain.
