Dal Khalsa expresses shock and awe at the Session court order sentencing wheelchair-bound Delhi University professor G N Saibaba to life imprisonment. We stand in solidarity with his daughter, wife and relatives, said party president Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema. He said the Gadchiroli session court has convicted Saibaba and four others to life imprisonment under draconian Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for “waging a war against the state”.Dal Khalsa sees this as a new trend in judicial activism, otherwise penalizing a wheelchair-bound 90 percent disabled university professor was unthinkable, he observed. The reported stories of the jail authorities and the cost not allowing life saving medicine to Saibaba is not only a violation of his rights but also very inhumane. He took exception over the manner the section of the media has portrayed Saibaba as a dreaded person. There is an effort to demonize him and through that whitewash the travesty of justice meted out by the court.  He hoped that the higher courts would reverse this travesty of justice.Meanwhile, in a separate statement Dal Khalsa condemned the killing of a 15-year-old boy in a police firing on Thursday during an anti-India protest in the valley following a gun battle between suspected rebels and the police. The statement alleged that New Delhi has given a free hand to security forces to kill anybody at anywhere in Kashmir. (CNS)
