Mamata Banerjee’s All India Trinamool Congress has formally thrown its hat into the electoral ring for the Punjab 2017 elections. After the party recently appointed Former MP Jagmeet Singh Brar as its party president for the Punjab unit last week it inaugurated its state head office in Chandigarh today. The inauguration was done by former Railway Minister & All India Vice President Mukul Roy in the presence of many former MLAs and Punjab Cabinet Ministers and a senior delegation of the Trinamool Congress from Delhi & Kolkata. In a press conference held later at the Chandigarh Press Club Mukul Roy and Jagmeet Brar laid out the future plans of the Trinamool Congress’s Punjab unit. Mukul Roy praised the efforts and leadership of Jagmeet Brar and said “Jagmeet Brar has a nearly 30 year old relationship with our leader Mamata Banerjee and they both share a strong bond of mutual trust and common values & principles – with Jagmeet Brar leading the efforts of the party in Punjab we are confident that the greater agenda of the TMC for India will be strengthened” He announced that in the coming days the TMC will be opening offices in every district of Punjab and appointing office bearers. When asked about the possibility of a pre-poll alliance with other political parties or contesting elections alone, Roy said “The state unit led by Jagmeet Brar has been asked to submit its assessment of the ground situation in Punjab and the final decision will be taken after the consent of Mamata ji. As of now all options are open for the party and our aim to be part of a clean and honest government in Punjab that will also be a part of our all India initiative.” Jagmeet Singh Brar added “A large number of ideologues and clean political personalities across party lines are in touch with me and in the coming days you will see the rise of a new force in Punjab politics” .On the speculation of a possible patch up with the Congress for the upcoming elections - Jagmeet Brar said "My main aim is to stop Akalis and Captain - Akalis have looted Punjab and Capt has supported them in every way - this is why I left the congress, there are good people in every party and if they are given a chance to save Punjab then all our options are open. The final decision will be made by Mamataji ofcourse".Brar said that the main issues of the party in Punjab would be Drug Eradication, Farming Crisis, Unemployment & Revival of Industry along with a big focus on Education, Health Services and rights for Women & backward sections. He also announced that the TMC will hold protests across the state to highlight the problems faced by farmers and small traders after the failed demonetization scheme of the NDA.
