Renowned religious scholar and Karwan-i-Islami Chief Maulana Ghulam Rasool Hami Wednesday demanded a thorough probe into the functioning of the Muslim Waqf Board. In a statement to CNS, the malpractices and corruption that has crept in Waqf has hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community across Kashmir.Referring to the general decline in the functioning of the Board, Hami said that the Waqf Board has been in news only for wrong reasons all through its introduction. He said the mismanagement of Waqf Board started shortly after a decade it was created when it was packed with politicians and favourites. The victims of the Waqf Board are always the welfare schemes like providing rations to destitutes, up gradation of educational institutions, procurement of ambulances, provision of prosthetic aid to the disabled and projects like the development of Mosques and Shrines. He said there is a dire need that Waqf Board should be freed from the clutches of political dispensation and men of great repute should be appointed to look into the functioning of the Board. “People have every right to know about the state of affairs of this Board. Corrupt must be exposed and punished,” he said.Despite asset rich, we must ponder over the fact that 8 decades old Waqf is unable to compete with recently created trusts like Mata Shri Vishnu Devi Board. “Waqf should issue a statement about income and expenditure and should also show door to employees appointed on political consideration. Instead of filling up their coffers the Waqf heads should devise multiple methods to contribute towards Muslim society,” he said. (CNS)
