Maha Shivaratri is a famous Hindu festival. Usually Shivratri is observed on the night of  Phalgun month Krishna Paksha Trodashi. As per convenience, this is observed every year during the  Chaturdarshi (Feb-March) in Krishna Paksha of  Phalgun month. On the day of Shivaratri, people worship Lord Shiva. Devotees pay respects to Lord Shiva by fasting and offering fruits, water and milk. This year this festival is on Monday, 7th March, 2016 in Dhanishtha Nakshatra and because the festival is on a Monday, it’s importance has increased as Monday is the day of Lord Shiva.

Position of Planets

The festival of Maha Shivaratri is usually celebrated when Venus is in its exalted sign Pisces. However, this time this is not the case, because this day Venus is in Capricorn. On the occasion of Maha Shivaratri this year, the conjunction of Jupiter and Rahu in Leo sign,is creating ChandaalYog. The previous Maha Shivaratri  in ChandaalYog in Leo sign occurred in 1980.
