The colleges across the Valley continued to remain closed for the third consecutive day on Thursday as the government had ordered the closure of all the colleges till Friday as precautionary measures.The colleges were closed by the authorities following the volatile situation on Monday as the students from university, colleges and higher secondary took to streets to protest against the alleged thrashing of students in Degree College Pulwama on Apr 15.The colleges which would remain closed till Friday according to the government order are scheduled to reopenon Saturday.Meanwhile, the students studying in the higher secondary and schools at various places including Srinagar took to streets today to protest against the alleged thrashing of students by forces in Degree College Pulwama in last week.Witnesses told KNS that the clashes erupted between the students and the forces in Safakadal area of Srinagar, Kangan area of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, Goshbug Pattan area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district and Bandipora district after the forces disallowed the protesting students to carry out their solidarity protest.
They said that the students studying in higher secondary schools and schools in these districts tried to block the road in their respective areas. However, the forces tried to disperse the protesting students by resorting to tear gas canisters thereby triggering clashes in the areas.Local sources informed KNS that the forces used tear gas shells to disperse the students who were throwing stones on them.They told KNS scores of students including some cops received injured during the clashes in these districts who were either treated locally or taken to the hospital for treatment.The protests by the students in the Valley started since Monday, demanding action against the forces involved in thrashing of students in GDC Pulwama.Meanwhile, police in a statement issued to KNS said that today “miscreants and some students of Government Higher Secondary School Nawakadal pelted stones upon security forces” camp at Braripora Nawakadal in the jurisdiction of Police Station Safakadal.“During this stone pelting one girl namely, Khusboo Jan daughter of Ghulam Mohammad Kuchay, resident of Noorbagh was hit by a stone on her forehead. She was shifted to SMHS Hospital for treatment where her condition is stable so far,” the police spokesman said. (KNS)
