The Deputy Commissioner-cum-Deputy District Election Officer, Chandigarh, today chaired a review meeting with the Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) to assess the progress of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the Electoral Roll in the Union Territory.

The meeting reviewed the generation and issuance of notices, scheduling of hearings and the timely disposal of claims and objections to ensure that the revision process is carried out in a transparent, fair and time-bound manner. The Draft Electoral Roll for Chandigarh was published on 21 July 2026 with a total of 4,50,282 electors.

During the review, it was informed that notices are proposed to be issued to 1,37,814 electors between 21 July and 18 September 2026. Of these, 69,461 notices relate to non-submission of linkage with the previous SIR while 68,353 notices pertain to logical discrepancies in electoral particulars such as mismatches in name spellings or inconsistencies in records mapped with parents or relatives.

The Deputy Commissioner directed that every elector receiving a notice must be provided a reasonable opportunity to submit the required documents or evidence before any decision is taken. He further emphasized that no elector’s name should be deleted from the electoral roll without proper verification, utmost care and strict adherence to the guidelines of the Election Commission of India.

He also instructed all EROs and AEROs to adopt a citizen-centric approach by ensuring the convenience of electors while scheduling hearings and disposing of claims and objections. He reiterated that all eligible electors, after satisfactory verification, will be included in the Final Electoral Roll, which is scheduled to be published on 22 September 2026.

The Deputy Commissioner stressed that the objective of the Special Intensive Revision is to prepare a transparent, accurate and error-free electoral roll while safeguarding the rights of every eligible voter.
