On the occasion of World Environment Day, Punjab Governor and Administrator, UT Chandigarh, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria led a plantation drive at Punjab Lok Bhavan, reaffirming his commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development. The initiative was organised under the nationwide campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”, launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to encourage citizens to plant a tree in honour of their mothers while promoting environmental stewardship and a greener future.
Shri Kataria, accompanied by his wife Smt. Anita Kataria, daughters and other family members, participated in the plantation drive and planted a variety of tree species known for their ecological, ornamental and medicinal value. As part of the initiative, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria planted an Amla (Phyllanthus emblica) sapling while Smt. Anita Kataria planted an Amaltas (Cassia fistula) sapling. Other family members also participated enthusiastically, with Shri Shiv Kumar Jain planting Gulmohar (Delonix regia), Ms. Renu planting Neeli Gulmohar (Jacaranda mimosifolia), Ms. Sonika planting Amrood (Psidium guajava), Ms. Rekha planting Gulmohar (Delonix regia) and Ms. Monika planting Pride of India (Lagerstroemia speciosa).
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Kataria said that environmental protection is a collective responsibility and called upon citizens, particularly the younger generation, to actively participate in plantation and conservation activities. He emphasized that trees are vital for maintaining ecological balance, improving air quality and ensuring a healthy environment for future generations.
Referring to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign, Shri Kataria said the initiative beautifully combines environmental responsibility with the values of gratitude and respect towards mothers. He noted that the campaign has inspired people across the country to contribute towards increasing green cover while strengthening their connection with nature.
Shri Kataria further observed that Chandigarh has long been recognised for its rich green cover and planned urban landscape. He reiterated the commitment of the Chandigarh Administration to further strengthen environmental sustainability through continuous plantation drives, biodiversity conservation measures and enhanced public participation in green initiatives.
The plantation drive formed part of the Chandigarh Administration’s ongoing efforts to enhance urban greenery, promote environmental awareness and encourage sustainable practices among citizens. The Governor also emphasized the importance of nurturing and protecting planted saplings to ensure that such efforts translate into lasting environmental benefits.
The initiative reflects the Administration’s commitment to preserving Chandigarh’s unique green character and contributing to the broader national vision of environmental conservation and sustainable development. Prominent among those present on the occasion were Shri Vivek Partap Singh, Additional Chief Secretary to Governor, Punjab; Shri Mandip Singh Brar, Home Secretary, UT Chandigarh; Shri Saurabh Kumar, Chief Conservator of Forests, UT Chandigarh; Shri Anup Kumar Soni, Conservator of Forests-cum-Chief Wildlife Warden, Chandigarh and other officers of the Chandigarh Administration.
