Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Sunday said that the unprecedented ethnic crisis in the state has caused immense hardship to all communities and stressed the need for unity and collective progress.

Inaugurating the newly constructed “Multipurpose Indoor Hall” under the Khelo India scheme at Charoipung Playground in Mayang-Imphal, the Chief Minister appealed to the people to leave behind past differences and work together for the development and peace of the state.

“We must forget the past and move forward towards development in the state,” Singh said while addressing the gathering. As part of the government’s relentless efforts to assist the ethnic violence affected Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), Singh on Sunday provided financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh to an IDP family member who is currently facing serious health issues.

The IDP family has been taking shelter in the relief camp at Pravabati College, at Mayang, Imphal, around 26 kms from Imphal city. At the Pravabati College fitness centre, the Chief Minister interacted with the representatives of IDPs and the college student’s union.

He said that India's sports are not complete without the presence of players from Manipur, similarly the sports of Manipur is also not complete without the players from Mayang-Imphal Assembly constituency. He added that once a player, he or she is always a player, despite ups and downs in their life.

On various demands raised by the local MLA Kongkham Robindro Singh, the Chief Minister assured the people of the Assembly constituency that a football turf will be constructed in the nearby area as desired. The fund for the construction of boys’ and girls’ hostel for the players will also be earmarked from the state budget and the construction of approach road will be initiated, he added.

Singh encouraged the people to form Self Help Groups (SHGs) as the government has already sanctioned around Rs 350 crore, which could be of help at the time of “Ningol Chakouba” festival. The Chief Minister also distributed commendation certificates and plagues to the players and coaches who have brought fames to the state and announced that the indoor stadium will be openedfor the people.

Singh also inaugurated a 100 bedded girls’ hostel, 8 class rooms, library, science and craft block of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) at Heigum Yangbi, Mayang-Imphal in Imphal West district.
