Reviewing the measures being taken to ensure safe commuting on district roads, Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal chaired a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee today at the District Administrative Complex, SAS Nagar. Expressing satisfaction over the rectification of 57 out of the 93 identified black spots in the district, the Deputy Commissioner directed the concerned departments and agencies to expedite work on the remaining locations on priority to further enhance road safety for commuters.
She stated that those black spots where only temporary measures have been implemented will also be provided with permanent solutions in the coming days. She instructed agencies including National Highways Authority, Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), Municipal Corporation Mohali, Public Works Department (PWD), and Municipal Councils to ensure timely and effective rectification.
The Deputy Commissioner also directed GMADA officials to complete the ongoing rotary works within stipulated timelines to facilitate smoother traffic movement. Appreciating the Municipal Corporation for installing grills on road medians to prevent illegal pedestrian crossings, she emphasized the need for proper installation and maintenance of no-parking signboards, speed limit signs, zebra crossings, speed table markings, and traffic signals.
Highlighting road safety enforcement, she stressed the importance of regular inspection of school buses under the Safe School Vahan initiative. She noted that violations such as over-speeding and red-light jumping are being monitored through CCTV surveillance, and e-challans are being issued to offenders.
The Deputy Commissioner further directed police officials to clear the backlog and ensure timely uploading of accident data on the e-Detailed Accident Report (e-DAR) portal to facilitate prompt claim processing. Progress in claim settlements under Hit and Run cases was also reviewed, with directions issued to expedite pending cases.
The meeting was attended by DSP (Traffic) Karnail Singh, Assistant Transport Officer Rohit Garg, Harpreet Singh from Avoid Accident NGO and officials from GMADA, PWD, and Municipal Corporation.
