In protest against the use of derogatory remarks by the Leader of the Opposition, Pratap Singh Bajwa, against Punjab Cabinet Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO, and demanding an unconditional apology from him, local leaders and residents of the Aam Aadmi Party staged a protest outside the Sangrur residence of former Congress minister Vijay Inder Singla.
Addressing the gathering, District Planning Committee Chairman Gurmail Singh Gharachon said that Pratap Bajwa’s remarks had exposed the anti-Dalit face of the Congress party. He recalled that earlier, during an event, when former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi was speaking about discrimination against Dalits within the Congress party, Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring had the microphone switched off.
Gharachon said that Congress leaders pay tribute to the architect of the Constitution, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, but on the other hand, they fail to respect Dalits. He added that Dr. Ambedkar, who belonged to the Dalit community, authored the Constitution of the world’s largest democracy, which guarantees equality to all.
He further stated that Sikh Gurus also gave equal status to all human beings, but Congress leaders are not willing to follow any positive ideals or teachings. Gharachon said that there are now so many contenders for the post of Chief Minister within the Congress party that they are busy pulling each other down and making irresponsible statements without thinking.
On this occasion, Punjab Waqf Board member Dr. Anwar Bhasaur, Market Committee Sangrur Chairman Avtar Singh Elwal, along with various office-bearers and workers of the Aam Aadmi Party and a large number of local residents, were present.
