Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla today called for united action to build a progressive and drug-free Himachal Pradesh while addressing the “Progressive and Drug Free Himachal” programme organised by The Times of India here today. Emphasizing shared responsibility, he said everyone must move forward with the conviction that “Himachal belongs to all of us,” adding that positive thinking leads to positive outcomes.

He asserted that there was no place for drugs in Devbhoomi and recalled his sustained statewide anti-drug campaign, which gradually mobilized youth, women and Panchayati Raj institutions. Expressing satisfaction, he noted that today the government, police administration and citizens are working together with renewed resolve.

The Governor underlined the crucial role of the media in shaping public opinion and stressed that effective law enforcement is indispensable to curb drug abuse. He urged the police to strictly enforce the law against traffickers, intensify awareness drives in colleges and communities, and strengthen outreach.

Highlighting the need for treatment and rehabilitation, he advocated establishing government-run de-addiction centres to ensure proper care and reintegration of those affected. “A progressive Himachal cannot be built by policies alone, it requires positive thinking, responsible media and active citizen participation,” he said, adding that such platforms serve as a bridge between government and society by bringing forward constructive suggestions.

Earlier, Director General of Police Ashok Tiwari outlined the state government’s and police department’s comprehensive initiatives against drug abuse and thanked the Governor and Chief Minister for their sensitive leadership. Chairperson, Himachal Pradesh State Women Commission Vidya Negi shared concerns about the disproportionate impact of drug abuse on women and stressed the importance of counseling children with empathy.

Former Senior Medical Superintendent, IGMC Shimla, Ramesh Chand also spoke on the issue. Earlier, Anjali Kumari, Branch Head, The Times of India, Chandigarh, welcomed the Governor.

A short skit depicting the harmful effects of drug abuse was also presented during the programme.
