The Department of Psychology, Government Degree College, Baramulla, observed World Mental Health Day 2025 on the theme “Access to Service: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies.” The event aimed to raise awareness about the need for accessible mental health care and the promotion of resilience during crises and emergencies.

The programme was held under the patronage of Prof. Mohammad Shafi Lone, Principal, GDC Baramulla, who emphasized the importance of mental well-being and the need to strengthen access to psychological services, especially in times of disaster and distress.

The guest speaker, Dr. Mudasir Hassan, Assistant Professor and Clinical Psychologist, Government Medical College, Baramulla, delivered an insightful lecture on the psychological consequences of catastrophes and the role of timely interventions. 

He highlighted coping strategies, family and community support systems, and the importance of integrating mental health services within emergency response frameworks. The programme featured a range of interactive activities, including a “Vent-Out Session” a safe space that encouraged participants to share their emotions and thoughts followed by a skit performed by students to promote awareness and reduce stigma surrounding mental health. 

The day also included a Mandala Art Activity, offering students an opportunity to express emotions through art and mindfulness practices. Fazila Mushtaq and Toiba Islam, BA Honors 7th Semester students of Psychology, conducted the proceedings of the program, while Khushboo Parveena, an MA Psychology 1st Semester student, planned and facilitated in the smooth execution of various components of the event including Vent Out session and Mandala Art activities. 

Mohammad Mateen Mushtaq, BA Honors 1st Semester student of Psychology, delivered a short yet insightful speech on the importance of creating awareness about mental health. The event was led by Dr. Kaiser Ahmad Dar, Head, Department of Psychology, GDC Baramulla, who appreciated the active participation of students and highlighted the department’s ongoing initiatives to promote mental health education. 

Dr. Aaliya Akhtar, Department of Psychology, GDC Baramulla, proposed the vote of thanks, acknowledging the contribution of all participants, faculty, and the distinguished guest speaker. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Abdul Majeed Bhat and Dr. Aaliya Akhtar, Department of Psychology, GDC Baramulla, along with other faculty members of the department. 

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students across undergraduate and postgraduate levels, reflecting a collective commitment to mental health awareness and community well-being.
