In a landmark initiative to foster global engagement and academic diversity, the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) hosted its first-ever Welcome Event for International Students on October 1, 2025. Organized by the Office of International Relations, the event celebrated the arrival of new and returning Master’s and PhD scholars from nearly a dozen countries across Asia and Africa—who now represent over 1% of the student body.

The event was graced by Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Director, IIT Ropar, whose keynote address emphasized the importance of international exposure in shaping future-ready leaders. Drawing from his own academic journey in Sweden, Prof. Ahuja encouraged students to embrace cross-cultural collaboration and global thinking. “Internationalisation is no longer optional—it’s essential for innovation,” he remarked.

The celebration featured vibrant cultural performances by international students, showcasing music, dance, and art from their home countries. A special recognition ceremony honored IIT Ropar students who recently returned from the prestigious Taiwan Experience Education Program (TEEP), where they engaged in cutting-edge interdisciplinary research.

A lively Q&A session followed, where Prof. Ahuja and Prof. Rohit Sharma, Dean of International Relations, addressed student queries and shared updates on IIT Ropar’s expanding global partnerships, exchange programs, and upcoming initiatives—including language and cultural orientation modules for incoming students.

Faculty members, deans, and doctoral supervisors joined the event, underscoring the institute’s commitment to creating an inclusive and globally connected academic environment. Students expressed heartfelt appreciation for the warm welcome and the sense of belonging fostered by the institute.

This initiative aligns with the vision of NEP 2020, which advocates for greater internationalisation of Indian higher education. With recent MoUs signed with leading universities across Europe, the Americas, Southeast Asia, and Africa, IIT Ropar is rapidly emerging as a hub for global research, innovation, and academic exchange.

The welcome event was more than a celebration—it was a declaration of intent: IIT Ropar is ready to embrace the world, and the world is finding a home here.
